What Does Hatha Mean?

Hatha is also translated as ha meaning “sun” and tha meaning “moon.” This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose.

The word hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas or postures), and sequences of asanas, designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body—especially the main channel, the spine—so that energy can flow freely.

Hatha yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation. It asks us to bring our attention to our breath, which helps us to still the fluctuations of the mind and be more present in the unfolding of each moment.

What Is Yoga?

The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj, means to yoke or bind, and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.

The Indian sage patanjali is believed to have collated the practice of yoga into the yoga sutra an estimated 2,000 years ago. The Sutra is a collection of 195 statements that serves as a philosophical guidebook for most of the yoga that is practiced today. It also outlines eight limbs of yoga: the yamas  (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditaion), and samadhi (absorption). As we explore these eight limbs, we begin by refining our behavior in the outer world, and then we focus inwardly until we reach samadhi (liberation, enlightenment).

Today, most people practicing yoga are engaged in the third limb, asana, which is a program of physical postures designed to purify the body and provide the physical strength and stamina required for long periods of meditation.

Do I Have to Be Vegetarian to Practice Yoga?

The first principle of yoga philosophy is ahimsa, which means non-harming to self and others. Some people interpret this to include not eating animal products. There is debate about this in the yoga community—I believe that it is a personal decision that everyone has to make for themselves. If you are considering becoming a vegetarian, be sure to take into account your personal health issues as well how your choices will affect those with whom you live. Being a vegetarian should not be something that you impose on others—that kind of aggressive action in itself is not an expression of ahimsa.

Is Yoga a Religion?

Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago. The father of classical ashtanga yoga (the eight-limbed path, not to be confused with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’ Ashtanga yoga) is said to be Patanjali, who wrote the Yoga Sutra. These scriptures provide a framework for spiritual growth and mastery over the physical and mental body. Yoga sometimes interweaves other philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but it is not necessary to study those paths in order to practice or study yoga.

I’m Not Flexible—Can I Do Yoga?

Yes! You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible.

This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination, and enhanced cardiovascular health, as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

What Do I Need to Begin?

All you really need to begin practicing yoga is your body, your mind, and a bit of curiosity. But it is also helpful to have a pair of yoga leggings, or shorts, and a t-shirt that’s not too baggy. No special footwear is required because you will be barefoot. It’s nice to bring a towel to class with you. As your practice develops we provide mats and other props available for you.

Why Are You Supposed to Refrain From Eating 2–3 Hours Before Class?

In yoga practice we twist from side to side, turn upside down, and bend forward and backward. If you have not fully digested your last meal, it will make itself known to you in ways that are not comfortable. If you are a person with a fast-acting digestive system and are afraid you might get hungry or feel weak during yoga class, experiment with a light snack such as yogurt, a few nuts, or juice about 30 minutes to an hour before class.

i can’t sit still and can’t touch my toes. is yoga for me?

One of the great things about yoga is it brings us all to the same common denominator—we all have the same struggles and worries, and though everyone comes in a different body, each of us has a path to travel to make it a more comfortable place to live. People come to yoga mindset with differing levels of experience, but there is room for everyone. We are ALL learning. Talk to us, and we can point you in the right direction.

can i leave during class?

In order to keep disruptions to a minimum, please plan to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. If for some reason you need to leave early, please let the instructor know in advance. You are, of course, always welcome to enter and exit the studio (quietly) during class to use the restroom.

Is it necessary to have information about yoga before starting the training course?

It is better if you have additional knowledge about yoga or meditation. It will help you obtain the new information better and improve upon your prior knowledge. However, it is not compulsory to have information about yoga before you start the course.

How many students are included in one group?

Each and every student receives personal attention and individualized care at our school. In order to provide this, we keep groups from 15 to a maximum of 20 students.

Is there a final exam to get the certificate?

Yes. During the whole TTC you will commit to a rigorous, yet rewarding practice. With the help of our experienced teachers and your hard work, you will gain deep knowledge about yoga and will be fully prepared to handle any class. After 27 days all students in the group will have a final exam, which will be conducted by Buddhayogpeeth teachers. Their valuable feedback will place you on the right path to become a professional yoga teacher.

Are all the teachers at Buddhayogpeeth, Rishikesh Yoga Teacher Training Center certified and experienced?

All the teachers at Buddhayogpeeth are highly qualified and experienced. They have national and international experience from different desirable destinations, such as Seychelles (Desroches Island) and United Arab Emirates (Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa, and Zaya Nurai Island, Abu Dhabi).

Can I stay at the accommodation longer than my teacher training or visit there earlier than it starts? How many days?

Yes. We will be happy to assist you and accommodate for 2-3 days before or after the course, but we advise you to inform us about it in advance, so that we will be able to make arrangements for you.

What are the main behavior and rules of the school?

During your yoga teacher training course you will fully immerse yourself in a yogic lifestyle & detoxification program. As students of Buddhayogpeeth and future yoga teachers, you will be expected to refrain from smoking, drinking, and illicit drug use. Not only will use of these substances be considered a violation of the school’s code, but will also negatively affect your yogic practice and health. Any violation within the school premises will be considered illegal and appropriate steps will be taken to prevent our students from similar situations.

If you would like to be back to the accommodation at a later time, please inform the responsible staff about it, as the school  gate closes by 11pm. In this case the person responsible will be aware and let you in once you return.

Can I have visitors during my course and stay in Rishikesh?

As per Buddhayogpeeth rules and regulations,you are allowed to have visitors but not after 9 pm. We request you to follow all the disciplinary rules and respect others in the ashram at all times. Upon arrival to the accommodation, your visitors will be asked to present the appropriate documents or ID proof.

What are the facilities in the room?

The accommodation is a quiet building with all the facilities you will need during your course. Each student will be provided with a room (single or sharing) with attached bathroom, cupboard and coffee table.You may decide how to furnish your room, but please ensure no damages to the accommodation.  Amenities include:

  • Weekly housekeeping service

What kind of food is provided in Buddhayogpeeth?

RishikeshYTTC offers very healthy and high protein food for all students.During the entire TTC, the carefully crafted meals will play a significant role on your health. You will follow the yogic diet with fruits, vegetables, greens and herbs, which will help you kick-start a healthy lifestyle and stay in proper shape.

About the portions, we don’t have a determined portion for each person. You may take as much food as you wish, but remember that too much food before the practice may be harmful for your stomach and will not let you feel comfortable during the whole day.
