Buddha Yogpeeth
Gopal ji has been teaching yoga in Rishikesh for the last eight years and while teaching at different yoga schools, he observed that not everyone who enrolled for the teacher training course in Rishikesh came with a mission of just learning yoga but some of them were looking for a more comprehensive experience such as cultural exposure, food and tourism exploration. Because of this, most of the yoga schools in Rishikesh were focused in curating this perfect experience, diluting the authenticity and essence of yoga along the way. Having completed his own yoga education from a Gurukulam, he missed the strict discipline and cultural appropriation he experienced and wanted to create a similar experience for others. During his tenure as a yoga teacher, working for different schools, he realized that a major bulk of the tuition fee paid by student went towards creating the premium experience, especially targeted at tourists and foreigners. This included premium accommodation, fancy meals and excursions which did not impart any value towards yoga education which should have been the top priority. It has been his dream for the last six year to bring the authentic way of yoga education to the world, complete with the yogic discipline, and ascetic way of life. He drew inspiration from his own education and worked on creating an ashram like atmosphere for people who are serious about their yoga education and want to solely focus on their practice. He allocated majority of his resources and budget towards hiring the best teachers and gurus for his school while cutting down on anything that wasn’t absolute necessity in the yogic journey so that his students could access high-quality yoga education at affordable prices. He believes that to truly experience yoga, one needs to dedicate themselves to the yogic way of life, where the only focus is on learning authentic yoga and learning the yogic discipline. He learnt from his experiences as a yoga teacher that the expense of a TTC course mostly went towards in food and accommodation and curating those premium experiences which is not important in a yogic journey. He wanted to create a school where the expenses went towards hiring the best teachers, gurus and faculties for the students and cut down cost in anything that wasn't absolute necessity. This way he could provide affordable and budget friendly TTC courses at a fraction of cost compared to other schools. Also, his goal behind such a concept is to attract like-minded people who want to experience the yogic discipline and Gurukulam culture, where your only focus is on your practice, your inner growth and disconnect from the materialistic pleasures of the world.
Our founder staunchly believes in the first Yog sutra by sage Patanjali – ‘Atha Yoga Anushasanam’, which translates into “Now, the discipline of Yoga.” He believes the first step towards becoming a yogi is discipline. If you delve more closely into its meaning, the word Atha translates into “Now”, acting as a reminder to be present in the now. We often forget the importance of being in the present, in the moment, the now that is in front of us. The second word, Yoga, originated from Yuj or yoke, which translates into union. Yoga is all about the union between the mind, body and soul, the union between individual consciousness (atma) and universal consciousness (parmatma). The third word, Anushasanam can be further simplified into Anu meaning atom – the smallest particle of matter and shasanam which translates into instruction. Inspite of having just three words in it, this sutra teaches us one of the most profound teachings of all time that when you train yourself to be in the present, you enter a state of union, a state of bliss. You require discipline to train yourself to be in the present and to disconnect from the external chaos. Inner work requires focus, discipline and observation, and to be able to go inward, we need to cut down on the external stimuli. Gurukulam provided such an environment for disciples to begin their journey to the self. There are a few ashrams and gurukulams still operating in and around India, but the atmosphere they provide could seem a bit rigid for people who are from different backgrounds and culture. We want people all around the world to experience what yogic life and yogic discipline means, albeit for a month, but in an environment that is flexible enough to accommodate their way of life. We aim to reimagine the Gurukulam culture, for the modern yogis. By disconnecting from the materialistic pleasures of live and learning to live with very basic amenities and eating food that doesn’t excite your palate but nourish your soul and being taught by gurus that carry within themselves a vast universe of knowledge and wisdom so that you can begin your journey to the self and pave way for inner growth.
We have a Fixed Menu and we always recommend our students to eat outside, if they wish. 3 nutritious meal daily (breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) featuring a delightful variety. Breakfast: Alternating between porridge, Bread, Jam & Cut fruits. Lunch: Daily Indian Kitchari & Salad. Dinner: Chapati (Roti) & Mix Veg or Chapati & Lentils
